Welcome to Division 4
Our names are Mrs. Dahlen and Mrs. Hodgson and we will be your child’s teachers this year. We team teach, which means that your child will have the benefit of two teachers working collaboratively to plan a great year! We have two SEA’s assisting us, their names are Rupi and Thiago. This newsletter is intended to help you and your child have a comfortable start to the school year. This newsletter covers various aspects of your child’s classroom routines and homework expectations.
Whatever grade your child is in there are many things that parents can do to assist their child. Encouragement and support are key to promoting your child’s love of learning. Setting aside a specific time each day for homework and studying is important as well as setting up a quiet area for your child to work. Keep well informed of your child’s assignments by reading his or her STUDENT PLANNER or teacher e-mails each day. Be aware of the criteria your child is being marked on and check over assignments to see if the criteria have been met. Last but certainly not least, encourage your child to have a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards his/her schooling and peers.
The students have worked cooperatively in groups and chosen rules for the classroom. For fun, we also brainstormed hashtags to go with each rule. They are:
- RESPECT OTHERS #antifist #bekind #keephandstoyourself #helpeachother
- BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR LEARNING #dothework #pleaseread
- SHOW GOOD SCHOOL CITIZENSHIP #norunninginthehalls #nostealing #noswearing #usepaperwisely
- ONE PERSON SPEAKS AT A TIME #onevoice #handup #listentoeachother
We look forward to working with your child this year and we are confident that we have an exciting and memorable year ahead of us! Thank you for taking the time to read all of this. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at the school or by e-mail.

We will teach, model and support all our students in the development of effective work habits and request parents to do the same. To help you understand our expectations we have listed some work habits below:
Students are expected to:
- Put their name on all work
- Try their best to complete and hand in all work within the allotted time
- Work independently without disturbing others
- Work cooperatively and productively in group situations
- Keep desk areas neat and organized
- Follow directions/criteria well and ask to clarify understanding
- Be organized and prepared for each task or subject
- Fill in their planner accurately and/or take home school notices for parents to read
- Use their planner to help keep themselves organized
This year we will be using a spelling program called Words Their Way. The students’ spelling will be assessed in early September and each child will be put into a group with others who are at a similar stage in their spelling development. A more detailed email will be sent once the groups are formed outlining homework expectations.
Each student will be bringing home a STUDENT PLANNER. This planner has been designed to reinforce your child’s organizational skills and to help him/her handle the responsibility of homework assignments. In the first term we will be doing a daily check to make sure the students have shown their planner to their parents. This will be used as part of our Personal Planning letter to grade, so please take a few minutes each evening to look over and initial the planner. This is a great way to keep up with what’s going on in your child’s school life.
All students are expected to read every day in class as part of the classroom READING WORKSHOP program. Students will select their own reading material, read at their own pace, and talk to others about what they’ve read. The teacher will model strategies for students to focus on before their reading time. We will have a variety of activities based on each strategy which will be kept in student’s personal READING WORKSHOP journals. These strategies can be reinforced when your child is at home.
There is a filing cabinet labeled “student’s missed work” in our classroom. It is the student’s responsibility to check and complete missed work. Arrangements can be made to send work home or a parent can pick up, if a student is absent for an extended period of time.
Each student is assigned a locker large enough to hold their backpack, lunch, gym strip bag, electronics and personal belongings. Locks can be purchased through the school. The office collects the lock combinations in a secure place. To avoid tripping hazards, there is no room in the classroom to store bags, jackets or extra pairs of shoes.
It has been brought to our attention that some parents have shown an interest in exchanging e-mails for reasons such as extending birthday invitations or arranging playdates. This is optional, and if interested, please reply yes to the question on the parent survey asking if you would like to be included in an open email list.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION (P.E.)
Students will have gym three times per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). Please ensure that your child has proper gym strip at school. This includes shorts (or sweat pants), a t-shirt (separate from what they wear to school),and a pair of gym shoes (if possible).
PE FITNESS TRAIL FORM
Please sign and return asap the PE Fitness Trail Authorization Form. On the back of the form you can see the two possible routes that our class will take. Trail walks are dependent on the weather but it’s always good to be prepared with proper shoes and jacket.
We encourage students to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated each day. Students are permitted to keep their water bottles on their desk. Please ensure that it has a tight cap/straw on the lid to prevent spillage. We do ask that water bottles are washed regularly.
To assist us and the SEA’s to get to know your child, please could you fill out the questionnaire that is attached and return it to school as soon as possible. THemore we know about your child, the more we can do to assist them in a positive way with their learning.
Thank you for working with us and we look forward to the upcoming year!
